What would go better with the yellow roses then some Gray feather ? (27)Liatris Purple this time. I think I'd like to put some evergreen up against the house as it's pretty bare right now. Mind you, there has been the occasional daffodil or crocus but they don't hang around very long and there is no height to them. I guess a couple of these Swiss mountain pines would look good. (36)Pinus mugo. I also picked up a Dwarf Alberta spruce (37)Picea. Both of these shrubs get quite large so keep that in mind when planting next to any structures. For instance mine were way too close to the house and I ended up moving all of them. But then again that's what I do. My friend Julie from work gave me a clump of Black-eyed Susan. She, for whatever reason didn't want them any longer so of course I accepted. The mound she gave me was about two feet in length, and say one foot wide. Within three years they have spread to about 25 feet long and about three feet wide. (38)Rudbeckia
1999, I'm not working as the Aetna Life Insurance company decided to downsize so as to save money. Or was it so the C.E.O. could get his 6 million dollar bonus ? Anyway, money is tight this year so there isn't much to add. I did manage to add a couple of things though. We always find a way to get the things we want. I grabbed 6 New England aster. Unfortunately the Asters I planted back in 1993 bit the dust. But I got the same ones again because I liked them so much. ( Aster )
2000, Back to work and of all places, the Aetna Life Insurance company. I had 22 years there when I got laid off so now I can continue to work on my retirement. Oh, by the way there paying me 6 thousand dollars a year more then when I left. That's not a bad thing. So let's spend some of that money. It's off to Lexington Gardens. Here's what we got. (39)Columbine, (40)Butterfly bush, (41)Foam flower, (42)Euonymus fortunei, & (43)Dwarf gold thread cypress. Next stop, Tower Farms. I picked up some (44)Weeping Higan cherries, (45)Weeping Norway spruce, (46)Dwarf Japanese cedar, (47)Blue moss cypress, & (48)Weeping nootka false cypress. Were not done yet, It's been a while since I bought any thing and I'm ready to make up for it. Vinny's has a clump of (49)Zebra grass. I've been eyeing & my friend who still works at Aetna gave me a bunch of (50)Common peony, & some (51)Gooseneck loosestrife.
Well, it looks like 2001 was a pretty good year. I guess to some, six or seven new plants a year would be no big deal, but for a lot of us, there not cheap. Especially if you buy more the one of each. I have however been looking to start more from seed & or swapping them with other gardeners in the neighborhood. O.k., enough whining. I ended up letting Jackson Perkins have my E-mail address and as they were hoping, they got me to buy, buy, & buy. I purchased some ground cover roses. 20 (52)Magic Blanket. I also managed to convince a friend of mine to relinquish 3 of his (53)Hibiscus syriacus, Rose of Sharon. I've always liked (54)Privets so I picked one up along with a (55)Japanese andromeda at once again, Home Depot. I took a trip to my favorite nursery which I can't for the life of me figure out why, as they are quite expensive. Maybe it's because I've ( so far ) had good luck with their plants. So I got some (56)Honkon grass, Dinner plate (57)Hibiscus, (58)Sweet woodruff, Japanese (59)umbrella pine, & 16 (60)Blue rug junipers. I'm on a roll now so I couldn't pass up another nursery on the way home. I didn't find too much but I did find a couple of Dead Nettle, (61)Lamium maculatum & some (62)Athyrium nipponicum pictum. My mother gave me 10 Hosta plants she pulled from her yard so I planted them in the small amount of shade in my back yard.
